The 297th Infantry Division was a unit of the German Army during World War II. It was formed in 1940 and took part in several theaters of war, particularly on the Eastern Front. The division was involved, among other things, in the Battle of Stalingrad, a turning point in the course of the war. After heavy losses and defeat at Stalingrad, the division was later deployed to other parts of Eastern Europe. Ultimately it was wiped out and disbanded in the final months of the war as German forces retreated.
