Dowsing - or Radiesthesia, as it is now often called - is a faculty which most people possess in a greater or less degree and consists in their ability to sense the presence of distant objects by means of certain muscular reflexes. Investigation carried out during the last thirty years shows that the dowser is a super-sensitive receiving instrument and that these muscular reflexes are a natural response to electro-magnetic effects in his surroundings. Various instruments have been devised for amplifying and recording these reflexes, the most familiar of which are the forked rod and the pendulum. By long practice and the use of certain devices the dowser can learn to differentiate between one object and another and to acquire much precise information regarding them. The author of this little book describes in simple language how the pendulum and the rod should be handled, and how the dowser can apply his skill to such purposes as the location of water and minerals, the testing of food, the diagnosis and treatment of disease and so on. The book also includes a chapter on the obscure practices such as dowsing on maps and obtaining answers to questions, which depend on the fact that the dowsing reflexes can also be aroused by a stimulus from the subconscious mind, in other words by a cause generally referred to as psychic.
