You may not want to have to construct
a proven, safe, and correct BFI from scratch or to have to do the proper research
in order to avoid design flaws or worse. You might want someone else who has
written instructions with pictures, who located, purchased, designed, made the
template adjustments, cut and finished the pieces, provided the correct
clips, hardware and hoses. You might want to optimize the results on your
first attempt using the correct design, and not make mistakes or have a subpar
result. This is a matter of careful study from extensive 3rd party
testing, personal experience on my own cars, resulting in proven benefits, value and CONVENIENCE for you.
The Kit is a clean-looking, near factory appearing Kit that does not have the obvious
"modification-look". Car dealers will tell you that the obvious
"modified look" can depreciate the value upon resale or cause
emissions testing problems (no one has reported any issue).
Customer Testimonials:

I installed your BFI kit on my V8 2 years ago. 4-2-1 headers + full exhaust and

3rd-party development, personal testing and experience shows demonstrates that you do not need to buy either a new expensive airbox or new expensive filters, and you can't get a better performing intake. The BFI is the definitive intake system for these cars, and is widely accepted as a baseline modification in 16 countries for many years.
Kit Install Overview: You unbolt and discard the inadequate snorkel from the existing airbox. Then remove, and cut a hole in the existing airbox according to the provided air-optimized and safe template. The Kit is installed to extend, enclose, and redirect a larger volume of cold air. Replace the airbox. Then, a simple and safe realignment to a few factory parts is made while adding pieces that are provided (no cutting) This safely redirects the some of the airflow from the upper grill section - which then "rams" cold air into the airbox. If done properly, all of these features significantly increase the air volume and intake pressure.
BFI Kit Model & Year Fitment:
What can this Kit do for your car? Increased horsepower (3rd Party dyno - up to 15.7 (SC300); 17.6 (SC400) horsepower results with - dyno testing has been generally accepted since ~2003. (After installation in my 1993 SC400™, it accelerates quicker, gears shift easier and smoother, gets better gas mileage, and has much better engine sound. (even with normal acceleration) I enjoy driving the car much more. My cars passed state emissions inspections without any issue for 19 years in Georgia. I would say that at a minimum with 3.5, the car performs better under normal driving (for example – the difference could be compared to performing better when the AC is off - versus the AC is on). This is oversimplified and understated. The car shifts faster and smoother with lighter gas pedal pressure. Plus, you will get improved gas mileage - especially on the lower RPM range. When accelerating hard, the car comes alive with much better sound, and better acceleration. I installed this Kit in my own '93 SC400™ in April 2008 & again in my '99 SC400™ in August 2018 - with NO issues whatsoever, no water ingestion, no overheating, no excessive filter replacements, nothing! I enjoy driving the car more and get better performance. The Kit works safely!
In the pictures, you can
see my original, beaten-up BFI cover and a
customer's BFI on his SC300™ - he made
some further refinements to the top cover (eliminated the front
clips, resizing the front and left edges for a sleeker look. Note that one
of the SC300™ and
Soarer™ mounting
points on the right side of the top cover are simply screwed down to a
factory-predrilled hole that is available on the radiator.
Model differences are addressed in the Installation Instructions.
I am available to answer questions during your installation by
email, phone, should you want help. Some simple drilling is required
on a few mounting points mostly to enlarge existing holes for some clips.
What is the reason for the Intake Kit? As good as the SC & Soarer™ engines are from the factory, it is commonly known and accepted that the airflow to the engine is badly restricted. With more pressurized cold air, the engine performs better. The reason is that the Kit has a combination of 3 Crucial Features: extended cold-air separation from road and engine heat, larger volume of cold, rammed-air from the front grill, and a larger intake capacity. Having ALL of these features is the key.
Other off-the-shelf intakes do not perform this good according to testing that others have done. The reason is that off-the-shelf intakes do not have all of the 3 Features. This Kit is less expensive than other lesser performing off-the-shelf products. You can use your paper or oil-based airfilter with the Kit, The BFI has been widely accepted for about 19 years by those that have taken the time to properly investigate.
What you need to know: Since I have done the hard part for you by putting together this Kit, you will still need to make final adjustments by form-fitting or bending some of the plastic pieces using a hair dryer or heat-gun to get the proper fitment. Installation can be done in stages - so you can drive your car in between stages. I was amazed how easily the install came together.
You will need a metric
socket set and basic tools to complete the installation. So, if
you want your car to run better, then this is considered a great project with a
clean, near factory appearance, giving you better gas mileage (yes - a gas
payback), more enjoyment and worthwhile results!
With your purchase, I will provide website-linked instructions that are very well documented with great pictures, testing results and specs. If you take your time, and do not rush through the install, then you should be successful.
