Description

Majestic and strong, sometimes ferocious, sometimes graceful A faraway story about divine beasts. This sacred beast (guardian dog) sits at the entrance of a shrine and has already blended into our landscape. It was the manifestation of an eternal culture that had traveled all the way across the Eurasian continent from around West Asia and Egypt. A wooden guardian dog from the Los Angeles County Museum of Art will be exhibited for the first time in Japan, as well as national treasures and important cultural properties from Kasuga Taisha Shrine and Yakushiji Temple. Including lions and guardian dogs made by Enku and Bokubi, from Tohoku to the Chugoku region, A collection of 142 works centered around lions and guardian dogs that are still enshrined throughout the Japanese archipelago. The lion, which does not originally live in Japan, traveled through Rome, Egypt, India, etc. over a long period of time, and arrived in Japan. We trace how they became so integrated into our landscape.
