Introduction:

Bilbo left Frodo a ring. Gandalf suspected it was a Ring of Power, and later confirmed it was lost by the Dark Lord Sauron. Frodo left with Sam and Pippin, chased by Black Riders. They met Elves, Merry, and Strider. They tried to shake off the Black Riders, but were trapped by Old Man Willow and a barrow-wight. Tom Bombadil rescued them and gave them ancient swords. Strider guided them to Rivendell. At Weathertop, they were attacked by Black Riders. Frodo was wounded. Glorfindel helped them reach Rivendell. The Black Riders were swept away by flood waters.

Sauron, the eponymous Lord of the Rings, was the greatest subversive Maia, maker of the One Ring, renowned disciple of Aulë, and chief agent of Morgoth in the Elder Days. After Morgoth's ousting by the Valar, Sauron became the second Dark Lord and sought to conquer most of Arda through guileful trickery, with the Rings of Power or with overwhelming armies.
