PICTORIAL ENVELOPE HISTORY

During the second half of the 19th Century some Victorian letter writers, in search of an added personal touch, used to decorate their envelopes with an attractive or humorous sketch. The best examples were ones where the stamp and the address were somehow made an integral part of the illustration.
Because of their unique charm, many of these old pictorial envelopes have survived to become collectors items today.
As this cover shows the original Victorian idea has been given a new lease of life. Now, as before, not only is the stamp merged into the picture but every opportunity is taken to make a pertinent social or political comment, celebrate events, or simply add humour.
Once more, cartoon and stamp come together in a way our Victorian forebears would have recognised with a smile.
