Through the growth of organisms and other processes in the aquarium, minerals are consumed and must therefore be supplemented regularly. These include, in particular, the necessary elements calcium, magnesium, and strontium, as well as carbonate hardeners for the growth of calcium carbonate skletons in stony corals, lime red algae and other reef organisms.
