A vintage 1966 print of a painting by Georges Braque from 1911 titled The Portuguese.

Taken from a Purnell publication, a high quality colour plate. Framed and double mounted behind glass.

Thought to be Braque's first piece with stencilled letters. Sometimes referred to as The Emigrant. It was inspired by a Portuguese musician in Marseilles and was created using a combination of papers to achieve the subtle tonal differences so as to encourage the search for shapes not colour.

An example of analytical cubism. The images are fragmented like broken glass, there is a guitar player in there somewhere !! Picasso produced a similar work at around the same time, the two men were friends and their work sometimes followed the same path. Indeed they both stopped signing the fronts of their paintings for a while making it difficult to distinguish the originator.

Braque (1882 to 1963 ) was a friend of Picasso and a founder of the cubist movement.

This print measures 19 inches x 15 in total, image size 11 x 7.75 inches approx.

In good condition and presents well.

Delightful and interesting example of this popular artists work.
