Silver Tetradrachm of Philip Philadelphos

Featured in this listing is a silver Tetradrachm weighing 13.95g of Philip Philadelphos. The coin features Philip on the obverse and a depiction of Zeus seated on the reverse.

Philip I Philadelphos was a Hellenistic ruler of the Seleucid Empire, holding the title of king in the 1st century BC. His life and reign are somewhat obscured by the lack of extensive historical records, but he is understood to have been a son of Antiochus VIII Grypus and his wife Tryphaena. His epithet "Philadelphos" signifies "brother-loving," which was a common title in the Hellenistic world used to express sibling loyalty or affection.

Philip I's reign was during a particularly tumultuous period in Seleucid history, marked by a series of civil wars and the fragmentation of the empire. Following the death of his father and the subsequent conflict among his brothers, Philip attempted to establish his rule over parts of Syria. His time as king, however, was characterized by ongoing strife with rival claimants, contributing to the further decline of Seleucid power in the region. Historical accounts suggest his reign was brief and his exact role and actions during this period remain largely unclear due to the scant and fragmented sources available.
