Artist:

Kameda Bosai (1752-1826) was a calligrapher, literati and Confucian scholar born in Tokyo. At the age of 23, he opened a private school and had more than 1000 pupils. But, he lost most of his pupils because he was considered as one of Goki (five demons) of the Kansei era, opposing Kansei Igaku no Kin (the prohibition of heterodoxy in the Kansei era) with the other four Confucians. After he closed the school, he traveled around and got famous for his calligraphy. He was considered as one of Sampuku-tsui (triplicity) of Shitaya with Tani Buncho (1763-1840) and Sakai Hoitsu (1761-1829), who were his lifelong friends.
