This film is a medium speed black and white negative film with a speed of 400 ISO with fine grain yielding "outstanding sharpness" in the resulting negatives. Kodak now claim that this film is their best selling black & white negative film! This film features a medium speed (400 ISO in most developers) which can be uprated to a fast 1600 ISO film (i.e. maximum uprating by 2 x f stops to 1600 ISO) with not much loss of quality, EXCELLENT TONE GRADATION & BRILLIANT HIGHLIGHTS, HIGH SHARPNESS, FINE GRAIN and HIGH RESOLVING POWER with that famous and unique Kodak TRI-X grain structure allowing a HIGH DEGREE OF ENLARGEMENT . Indeed photographers who swear by this film prefer its UNIQUE GRAININESS (RMS:17) over other black & white films like Kodak TMAX 400 which has virtually no grain (RMS:10). In addition Kodak TRI-X has a wide exposure latitude being particularly forgiving to 2 to 3 x f stops UNDER or OVER EXPOSURE yielding negatives that can still produce excellent prints.
Kodak have just improved the quality of all their films with new manufacturing facilities in USA but as far as black & white films are concerned and they have upgraded the TRI-X (and indeed the TMAX range of black & white films) to the highest quality available in any black & white 400 ISO film currently made so that these films now bear the title "Kodak Professional films". It is, of course, a matter of individual choice as to which type of black & white film is suitable for each photographer but the UNIQUE GRAIN STRUCTURE, wide exposure latitude as well as high sharpness & resolving power for Kodak TRI-X plus the loyal following this film has gathered over the past few decades makes this Kodak's MOST POPULAR black & white negative film.
IN SHORT: This Kodak TRI-X 400 film is a favourite with millions of loyal photographers over the past few decades, has high sharpness & resolving power, wide exposure latitude excellent tone gradation & brilliant highlights plus the UNIQUE GRAIN STRUCTURE that differentiate this film from most other black & white negative films. You can even make black & white slides from colour or black & white negatives or colour slides plus duplicate black & white negatives from either colour or black & white negatives. A truly versatile, extremely high quality film.
