This 1980 Range Rover has
been well maintained throughout its lifetime with only some minor changes from the original specifications.
The car is powered by a
135hp 3.5-litre Rover V8, coupled to a four-speed manual transmission with
constant four-wheel drive and high- low ratio transfer case. A vacuum
operated centre diff’ lock is also standard. The odometer shows 48,000 km
but the actual milage is an authentic 148,000 km. Aspiration is via the
original twin carburettors, however the bulky oil filled air cleaners have been replaced
with compact units.
Manufactured in Range
Rover’s Solihull, England, factory, as a CKD kit, (Completely Knocked
Down) it was subsequently exported to the Australian market, assembled
there, and sold to the original owner in August 1980 by Leyland Australia
in Penrith New South Wales
It was purchased in 1995 by the
current (2nd) owner and has now been in their possession for around 29
years.
The chassis and engine
numbers are confirmed to be matching.
The car has always been
garaged, both by the original owner and the current owner, and consequently
it is rust free.
The vehicle is currently registered
with New South Wales historic plates and is used infrequently on weekend
drives and club events.
CONDITION
The paintwork is original Bahama Gold and is in very good condition with some minor chip repairs and
other small blemishes. The bonnet and the bumper bars have however been
re-sprayed. Overall, the car is in excellent condition with an authentic
‘patina’. It is a head turner for ‘those who know’, when out in public.
Overall, the interior presents
extremely well. The original dashboard plastics and switchgear controls
are in very good order as are the original steering wheel, instruments,
cubby box and the ashtray between the front seats. The door cards have
been replaced. The seats however do need to be fully refurbished with the seat
covers currently hiding the sins. The original floor mats and lower trims
have been replaced with new black and grey themed carpet and rubber
matting.
It rides on original
specification 16-inch steel wheels, recently powder coated and shod with brand
new A/T tyres.
Dealer-fitted options
include a tow bar, air conditioning, oil cooler, exhaust extractor
manifolds and electronic pointless ignition. The bull bar is of the style fitted to the original Camel Trophy
vehicles.
This model has automatic
choke carburettors and meet the Australian emission control regulations
for detoxed engines at that time.
The cargo bay has the
original factory-fitted two-piece soundproof mat under the carpet, which is rare to find preserved
in a car of this vintage.
All major drive functions are
original and work well. Forward and reverse gears engage easily, low range
selection works smoothly, the centre diff’ lock is fully functional
together with the indication. The hand brake engages correctly, and the
indication is functional.
The power steering system is
fully functional with no leaks. There is no detectable backlash present at the steering wheel.
The body is straight and is
all original, with no evidence of rust, or past accident repair.
The chassis is straight and
fully original with no rust, no damage, modifications, or repairs.
All the original lights, instruments,
controls, and indicators are fully functional. Driving lights and reverse camping lights have been added.
Included is the functional, near
impossible to find, original factory fitted pioneer radio cassette unit, together
with the main amplifier, plus manuals.
The doors close easily and the door locks work correctly from the keys, internal tabs, and the interior and
exterior handles. The tailgate closes and seals well, and the lock is
fully functional as is the lock on the fuel filler cap. All the windows,
front and rear, and quarter vents operate correctly although the passenger
side window is a little tight.
The engine pulls with plenty
of power, and steers and tracks extremely well. The AC is currently not working
but did work well when gassed up some time ago, the AC compressor, electric
clutch and fan are functional as are all the controls.
The seller is not aware of any other electrical or mechanical issues with
the car.
SERVICE HISTORY
The original owner self-serviced
the vehicle on a regular basis after the warranty period expired and the
current owner is an engineer who has continued the regular service and
repairs to date.
The radiator, carburettors,
wheel hubs, wheel bearings, brake callipers, shock absorbers, and power
steering have been rebuilt or replaced.
The interior roof lining was
also replaced.
The belt driven radiator
cooling fan has been removed and replaced with thermostatically controlled
fans which have significantly improved cooling when slow running or stuck
in city traffic in the severe Australian summers. Restoring back to the
original fan and cowling would be a simple and inexpensive exercise
A tow bar is fitted with an electronic trailer brake
controller to allow legal towing of trailers and caravans
up to the car’s maximum rating of 4000kg.
SUMMARY
This Range Rover
Classic is a striking well-preserved example of the now rare, two-door series,
and was among the batch of vehicles imported to Australia in 1980 in kit form to
be built up by the PKC company which had been assembling Land Rovers at their NSW
Enfield site since 1956.
Having been well
maintained with some minor deviations from the original, this vehicle is an
honest, survivor car that can be used immediately as a daily drive.
It also presents an
opportunity to easily fully restore it to exact original specifications if
one should wish, and it would make a fine addition to any collection of rare
British classics.
Accompanying the
vehicle are the original owner’s manuals, warranty documents and service manual as well as documentation on all fitted electrics plus an assortment of spare parts.
Happy to facilitate
local inspections.
