Antique 1930s era hand-painted lacquer box from the Russian village of Mstera. The box depicts scenes from the Russian fairy tale “The Little Humpbacked Pony”. It is signed in Cyrillic on the bottom left of the lid with the village name “Mstera” and on the bottom right with the artist's signature “Shilov”. The title of the work “Humpbacked Pony” is across the top. All are visible in the photos.


Fiodor Shilov was born in Koroby of the Vladimir region in 1915. He became a member of the Proletarian Art Artel in 1931, and joined the USSR Union of Artists in 1940. He worked among the leading artists of Mstera. He became a member of the USSR Union of Artists.


The box is showing wear commensurate to its age. There is extensive craqueleur and there are several tiny chips in the painting. There is missing lacquer on the inside lid. The box measures approximately 4 1/8 inches long, 3 1/8 inches wide and 1 1/8 inches tall.
