Nagra III

This is a Nagra III analog tape recorder, with an up-to-date 3rd party power supply.  It has been recently serviced, and is performing very well.  It is super clean inside as well as outside.  The modern “switching type” power supply being supplied with this recorder ensures stable, trouble-free operation.  It supports up to 5 inch reels with the cover closed, and 7 inch reels with the cover open.

Having tested and restored a number of these Nagra IIIs over the years, this one stands out in comparison to most others.  One great feature of the Nagra III is that it supports either NAB or CCIR standards at the 7½ ips speed; so, for example, if you have some old European recordings you would like to hear again, this is a good source.  Overall, it supports NAB standards for 3.75, 7.5, and 15 ips.

And as you will see from the photos, this Nagra III is still in nice cosmetic condition.  The top cover does have some scratches and scuffs and an old epoxied repair in the rear right corner, but is still structurally sound, looks good, and functions well.

I have been collecting, restoring, and historically writing about tape recorders for several decades.  My original book “Evolution of the Audio Recorder” was published in the late ‘90s and has been sold around the world.  I hope to have my new book “Evolution and Restoration of Cinema Audio Recorders” available soon.  Regrettably, I have had to release the bulk of my collection over the past few years for distribution for others to enjoy.  There are a relative few that were left in my possession, of which this is one of my favorites.

Payment is to be within 3 days of auction end.  Shipping will be to domestic United States locations at a fixed cost as shown above, and will be packed super well and double boxed.  If there is an international purchase, it will ship to eBay at the fixed cost above, and then – as I understand it - through eBay’s Global Shipping Network.  You can check with them as to their price for then forwarding the package to your country (19 lb., 22 X 17 X 12 inches).

Thank you for considering, and please check my feedback to be assured of a great transaction.

Please note that this is a 60 year old recorder, and while every attempt has been made to ensure its continued great performance, statistically most all of the components are – in fact (as with any older and even “restored” electronics) – 60 years old.  (Most sellers do not point this out to prospective buyers, but I feel it is important for folks to consider this.)  Therefore although it is working great now, and for local pickup I can demonstrate it for you, but I cannot provide a warranty; thus it is sold as-is, with no returns.

I have added a couple of pictures of the tape heads.  Please note some reflections on the shiny front surfaces; those are reflections off of the deck surface.
