ABSTRACT: this appreciated work dedicated to the painters of antiquity, expression of that close link between erudition & science that is one of the most interesting characteristics of 17th-century Italy.

A pupil of Galileo, Dati combined his scientific passion with a solid humanistic education, and in 1648 he was entrusted with the chair of classical languages at the University of Florence

a member and secretary of the Accademia della Crusca'. Both the famous emblem of the academy and the altarpiece of Dati lo 'Smarrito' are chosen to mark the different sections of the Lives of Ancient Painters, undoubtedly the best known book of the Florentine scholar.

Dati's academic name or nome di Crusca was ‘Smarrito',

It contains the biographies of four celebrated Greek painters of the 5th and 4th centuries BCE, Zeuxis of Heraclea, Parrhasius of Ephesus, Apelles of Colophon, and Protogenes of Caria.

Dati relied on ancient sources for information on the life and works of each painter, and he also consulted a great number of manuscripts made accessible thanks to his vast and numerous intellectual relationships
