The extreme metal band Enslaved, which is the ultimate in progression, has released a new album.
This work, which depicts the city of "Utgard" inhabited by giants, while pursuing further progressivity and returning to black metal, is a dark masterpiece that marks a new milestone for them! There are many bands that emerged from the context of black metal and subsequently pursued their own musicality.
The Norwegian progressive extreme metal band Enslaved is one of them.
Ivor Bjornsson (G) and Grutre Chelsson (Ba, Vo) formed Enslaved in '91.
Ivar was only 13 years old at the time, so his precociousness is astonishing.
After releasing two demos, he made his debut in '93 with a split with the Emperor.
The symphonic black metal style presented by both bands was nothing short of shocking.
For the time being, we used the term "black metal", but what made Enslaved decisively different from other bands such as Emperor was that they did not use any satanic imagery.
They were among the first to adopt the world of Norse mythology and, together with the Swedish bathory, laid the foundations for today's Viking metal.
Beginning with their '94 full-length debut, Vikingligr Veldi, they were aiming for a long one, with four of the five songs over 10 minutes long.
With each subsequent work, the potentially progressive elements that were there from the beginning came to the fore.
'97's Eld was a bold move to open with the 16-minute blockbuster "793 (Slaget om Lindisfarne)."
'03's "Below the Light," which was produced after a major lineup change, was a masterpiece that marked a leap in the progressive direction and was "a milestone for Enslaved" by Grutre himself.
Today, they are a band that has garnered a huge following from fans of both extreme metal and progressive rock.
It's been three years since his previous work, "E," which was the ultimate in progress.
Enslaved is pleased to announce the release of their 15th new album, Utgard.
"Utgard" is the name of the city where the giants in Norse mythology live.
But on a psychological level, according to Glutere, it represents the realm of sleep, dreams, lucid dreams, and the outer edges of what lurks in the conscious and subconscious.
This is a terrifying journey to Utgard, and the music is also very dark. While the
black metal elements that are clearly reminiscent of early Enslaved are back, the tentacles in the progressive direction are stretched even further, making it a truly ambitious work.
"Like 'Frost' and 'Below the Light,' this album could be a milestone for Enslave," says Grutre with great confidence.
That is fully convincing.
Summing up Enslaved's 30-year career, Utgard is a masterpiece that combines the pursuit of further progressivity with a return to black metal.
