THE STEELEYE SPAN STORY - 1977 - TWO ORIGINAL 8" X 10" PRESS KIT PHOTOS + GROUP BIO

A two-disc compilation from 1977, The Steeleye Span Story is a neat summation of the British folk-rockers' early career. Its 22 tracks come from the band's first nine albums, released between 1971 and 1977: Hark the Village WaitTen Man MopPlease to See the KingBelow the SaltParcel of RoguesNow We Are SixAll Around My HatCommoner's Crown, and Rocket Cottage. There's also one previously unreleased track, a version of the traditional "Bonny Moorhen," but it's of negligible import. What's most interesting about The Steeleye Span Story is that while there's a clear progression between the sparingly electric, mostly traditionalist Hark the Village Wait and the poppier, more muscular Rocket Cottage, which was produced by Wombles mastermind Mike Batt, this collection sounds all of a piece. The small handful of non-traditional tunes, like the Ashley Hutchings-penned choral piece "A Calling on Song" and the hit single "All Around My Hat," fit in perfectly with familiar folk standards like "Black Jack Davy." Maddy Prior's stunning voice, augmented by Gay Woods' harmonies on the early tracks, is one of British folk's most magnificent instruments, and on classic folk-rock tunes like "One Misty Moisty Morning" and "Sir James the Rose," Steeleye Span deserve all of the acclaim their more-lauded sibling band Fairport Convention received.

These original press kit photos and group biography was provided to record reviewers to promote the release of The Steeleye Span Story greatest hits two-disc album in 1977. I was a record reviewer, interviewer and writer for music publications in Southern California and Florida. I've been the only owner of these press kit photos and bio since then. The 8 inch by 10 inch photos have been scanned low-res but the photos you will receive will be sharp and in excellent condition.
