Dowd began working for the NEW YORK TIMES in 1995.  She interviewed both BARACK OBAMA and HILLARY CLINTON.  Dowd was named the "Woman of the Year" by Glamour in 1996 and was awarded the PULITZER PRIZE in 1999.  Her columns have been described as "letters to her mother." In the Acknowledgments page, Dowd wrote:  "Peggy Dowd was a man's woman, a woman's woman, and a mom of moms, a queen of vitality who died at a luminous ninety-seven just as I finished this book. . ." Dowd said her mother suggested that she change the title to "Why Men Are Necessary" and replied "for breeding and heavy lifting." The book is the saucy reporter's exploration into the mysteries and muddles of sexual combat in America. Her chapter titles are clever:  "Of Pussycats, Booty Calls, Road Beef and Slump Buster," "How to Set Your Bear Trap in the Mink Department of Bergdoorf's," "Why Pandora's Box Is No Tender Trap," "Whipping the Pants Off the Women Who Wear Them," "How Green Was My Valley of the Dolls," "The Drag of Going Stag," "Why the Well-Hung Y Is Wilting, Even as the X Is Excelling," and "How Hillary Smushed Cupcakes and Filleted Feminism." 338 pages---a HILARIOUS book!
