Vintage Tin Iron Token Coin -

2 Shillings Williams Bros Direct Supply Stores

DESCRIPTION This is a vintage tin iron token coin as shown. The text embossed on the front reads "Williams Bros Direct Supply Stores Ltd Two Shillings " This token comes with no papers, box etc.

Two young brothers, John and Alfred Williams, from Sheerness in Kent founded their business in 1872 with their first small shop located in Caledonian Road, Islington. The Times 16/11/1963 reported that Williams Brothers Direct Supply Stores Ltd had 150 grocery, butchers & hardware shops in the Home Counties and North London.

They had used a form of trading stamps since 1910, from this date the customer received metal tokens to the value of purchases which were redeemed at 5 per cent of the face value. Many varieties of the tinned iron tokens exist the most noticeable of which is the pence denomination with various forms of the underlined D and spacing of the letters; also positioning of the legend in relation to the circle, oval or square of the design. Also noted is that unusually none of sixpences have Ltd in their title. No varieties of the brass 5/- 10/- or 20/- have been found.
