Scott Turow, who was born in 1949 in Chicago to a family of Russian Jewish descent. Turow graduated from Amherst College, and attended Stanford University's Creative Writing program from 1970-1972.  He received his J.D. law degree from Harvard in 1978. "The Burden of Proof" is Turow's second novel, and somewhat of a sequel to "Presumed Innocent." The novel follows the defense attorney Sandy Stern in the aftermath of his wife's death and the growing realization that there is much about his marriage that he has never understood. Stern's bereavement coincides with his latest case, defending commodities broker Dixon Hartnell. Hartnell is a complex figure, one that Sandy admires but doesn't trust. Stern soon realizes that defending "Dix" will force him to tread a narrow path between zealous advocacy for a client and his ethical responsibilities to the courts. The novel is set in the fictional Midwestern Kindle County, Illinois, the setting of Turow's other novels, and features or refers to characters that appear in those other stories. Turow wrote in the 'special message' foreword:  "The thought of writing more about Stern was immediately pleasing.  Rusty, as I had portrayed him, was curious about Stern's inner life but unable to get beyond his attorney's somewhat impossible formal manner, and I had the same interest in finding out what made this vaguely unapproachable lawyer's lawyer tick. . .  One morning morning while shaving it first occurred to me what had ailed Clara Stern."  313 pages.  I offer combined shipping.
