Minolta AF Maxxum

Macro Flash 1200AF Kit

In this listing is a Maxxum 1200AF Ringlight Macro Flash that is in mint minus condition. (S/N 305011xx) There are just a few light scuffs on the controller unit and ring light, nothing of consequence. The battery compartment is free of corrosion and the unit works perfectly. The protective film remains on the rear guide.

The 1200AF Macro Flash is perfect for shooting Macro photography and is also useful in general and portrait photography.

The original 55mm adapter ring did not arrive with the unit. I did come up with a solution using a 55mm Hoya filter and a 55-58mm step up ring. The step-up ring fits perfectly into the ring light, and holds it securely. You can then attach your 55mm filter thread macro lens to the filter. With a 55-49mm step down ring, you are set to use a 49mm filter threaded macro lens.

The flash is a thing of beauty, a fine example of everything that was the best from the “Mind of Minolta”. Everything about it is engineered to perfection. All four light tubes are individually switchable for 1, 2, or 3 lamp directional, and 4 lamp full illumination. The tubes will illuminate prior to shutter release to act as an AF assist while focusing. The controller sports a slide exposure guide similar to the 2800AF flash to assist in aperture setting based on working distance.

*Using an optional Minolta FS-1100 flash adapter to connect to a camera body, the 1200AF Macro will also work on Sony Alpha DSLR’s, however you do not get TTL (through the lens) exposure capability and must work with the maximum flash output. I found that while playing with the flash on my A77, I could quickly obtain accurate exposure with minimal trial and error between f/11 and f/32 with the flash output and I could utilize any configuration of the 4 lamps.

With an additional NDx2 or NDx4 (neutral density) filter, you should be able to use larger aperture settings necessary to control a narrower depth of field. Most shooters will like the additional depth of field that the flash affords rather than trying to limit it.

This is a much more affordable Macro Ring Light when compared to the new Sony Twin Flash.
