1965 GILERA 124 SEI GIORNI SPECIALE (SIX DAY SPECIAL) RUNNING PROJECT IN FAIRLY GOOD CONDITION

WHEN I BOUGHT THIS GILERA, 10 YEARS AGO, I WAS TOLD THAT IT WAS LICENSED AND USED FOR SEVERAL YEARS BEFORE BREAKING DOWN AND BEING PUT INTO STORAGE, AWAITING REPAIR.

DUE TO THE SUBSEQUENT DEATH OF THE OWNER THE REPAIRS WERE NEVER COMPLETED AND A COMPANY NEAR REDDITCH WAS SELLING THE GILERA ON BEHALF OF THE LATE OWNERS SISTER. FOR REASONS NOT KNOWN THE REAR NUMBER PLATE AND FRONT MUDGUARD (WHICH WOULD HAVE SHOWN THE ORIGINAL REGISTRATION NUMBER) WERE BOTH MISSING, AS WERE ANY DOCUMENTS.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                              

I HAVE COMPLETED MOST OF THE WORK REQUIRED TO GET THE GILERA READY FOR USE ON THE ROAD AGAIN. IT HAS AN AGE-RELATED REGISTRATION NUMBER AND A NEW V5C. (Current status – on SORN). IT WAS MY INTENTION TO GET IT PRESENTABLE AND RIDEABLE AGAIN, RATHER THAN A FULL RESTORATION TO ‘GOOD AS NEW’ CONDITION. THE REPLACEMENT FRONT MUDGUARD AND CHAINGUARD WERE NOT ORIGINAL BUT SHARED A CLOSE LIKENESS TO ORIGINAL A NEW FRONT TYRE AND TUBE HAVE BEEN FITTED AND A NEW BATTERY AND LENS FOR THE REAR LAMP AND THE MISSING PARTS FOR THE ENGINE – PISTON AND PUSHRODS. A STOP LIGHT SWITCH AND A NEW VOLTAGE REGULATOR ARE INCLUDED, BUT NOT YET FITTED. IT WILL NEED A DRIVE CHAIN. THE PAINT ON THE FUEL TANK AND TOOL BOXES IS POOR AND PROBABLY NOT ORIGINAL. THE SILENCER HAD A SMALL HOLE WHICH HAS BEEN REPAIRED WITH A PATCH.

THE WORK REQUIRED TO FINISH THE BIKE IS MOSTLY LIGHTING. AT THE MOMENT THE BIKE RUNS WITH A SUPPLY FROM THE BATTERY. THE DYNAMO, REGULATOR AND LIGHTING SWITCH NEEDS CHEKING AND WIRING NEEDS TO BE INSTALLED. AS I AM NOW OVER 81 I DO NOT INTEND TO RIDE IT MYSELF, SO HOPEFULLY I CAN PASS IT ON TO SOMEONE ELSE TO COMPLETE.

THE 124CC 4 STROKE GILERA WAS AVAILABLE FOR MANY YEARS IN DIFFERENT FORMS - FROM THE GIUBILEO, THE EXTRA, THE SIX DAYS AND THIS MODEL WHICH I THINK WAS THE TOP OF THE RANGE - THE SIX DAYS SPECIAL WHICH HAD ALLOY RIMS INSTEAD OF STEEL A NUMBER OF GO FASTER FEATURES AND STRANGELY, ON SOME VERSIONS - CLIP-ON HANDLEBARS. THERE IS A LOT OF INFORMATION ABOUT THESE BIKES ON THE INTERNET.

IN ADDITION TO THE V5C DOCUMENT THERE IS A DATING CERTIFICATE FROM THE GILERA HISTORICAL REGISTER (ARCORE) SHOWING THAT THE GILERA WAS MADE IN MARCH 1965 AND DESPATCHED TO GEORGE CLARKE THE UK IMPORTER. THERE IS ALSO A COPY OF A ROAD TEST FOR THS MODEL FROM 1964
