A Stunning, Antique Victorian Hand Carved Cameo Brooch / Pendant - Excellent Craftsmanship

Date: Circa 1880

This jewel can be worn as either a brooch or pendant as it has a hinged gold hanging loop

Very fine Victorian, hand carved shell cameo, depicting Phoebus Apollo ascending in his chariot, proceeded by Eos (Aurora), goddess of Dawn and the Genius of Light. The Horae (Seasons) and nymphs dance in attendance upon his chariot. The scene is based on a ceiling fresco by Guido Reni (1613) in the Rospigliosi Palace, Rome. The cameo carved relief is superbly carved with fine details. It has crisp high relief carving set into a decorative wide14k yellow gold setting. Original long gold pin and "C" clasp. Marked 14k on an applied plaque.
