On offer: an original (i.e. not a later reproduction) attractive and scarce antique Pigot map "Hampshire."
The map is offered with a vignette of Winchester Cathedral and has early outline colour. The map illustrates the county divided into its forty hundreds.
DATE PRINTED: c.1830. An attractive and detailed map of the entire county by James Pigot. Decorated with a vignette view. The map was first published in "Pigot & Co.'s British Atlas Of The Counties Of England" in 1830 and was re-published until c.1845 after which the plates were sold to Slater. Slater issued the map with his imprint until c.1858. The address on the imprint indicates an early printing.
SIZE: The printed area including titles is approx. 9" x 14.5" (23 cm x 36.5 cm).
ARTIST/CARTOGRAPHER/ENGRAVER: Drawn by James Pigot & Co.
PROVENANCE: The map was published in Pigot & Co's "British Atlas". This map first appeared in 1830 when Pigot & Co's British Atlas was first published in parts. The map was also used in his 'Commercial Directory' but these have folds for the smaller book format. J. Slater purchased the plates c.1847 and issues after that have his imprint at the bottom. Slater continued using the plates with his imprint until c.1858.
TYPE: Antique steel plate engraving printed on paper.
VERSO: There is nothing printed on the reverse side, which is blank.
CONDITION: Good. Suitable for framing. Please check the scan for any blemishes prior to making your purchase. Virtually all antiquarian paper is subject to some normal aging due to use and time which is not significant unless otherwise stated. Closed split top right corner. Mild browning. A decent but not perfect example priced accordingly.
