BIOGRAPHICAL NOTES: JOSEPH BARCLAY

Birth  10 Jul 1793

Death 15 Apr 1889 (aged 95)

Burial Old First Methodist Church Cemetery, West Long Branch, Monmouth County, New Jersey

Joseph Barclay, of Eatontown, died yesterday morning of pneumonia, which resulted from a
recent cold. He was in his 97th year, and was the oldest resident of Eatontown township. He was
born near Turtle Mill, and lived at Poplar for a great many years. He afterward lived near where
the Monmouth Park race track is now located, and afterward moved to Eatontown.
Mr. Barclay was at one time a judge of the Monmouth courts and for many years served as a
justice of the peace. He was in the store business for several years, and at one time was a partner
of Wm. T. Corlies, of Red Bank. He was the leading spirit in the organization of the Shrewsbury
mutual insurance company, and was the financial manager of that institution almost from the
time of its organization in 1838 until a few years ago. Its wonderful success was attained largely
through his work.
Mr. Barclay was one of the wealthiest men in Eatontown township. A number of years ago he
distributed a large part of his wealth among his kindred, but he would still be considered a rich
man.
He was twice married. His first wife was a widow, a Mrs. Lee, of Virginia. By her he had two
children, a son and a daughter, both of whom are now dead. The daughter married Joseph T. Allen
of Shrewsbury. Mr. Barclay's second wife was the daughter of George Allen, of Shrewsbury.
No children blessed this union. His second wife is still living, as is also his adopted daughter,
who is the wife of Wm. R. Stevens, of Eatontown.
The funeral will take place from his late residence at one o'clock on Friday afternoon.

Judge Joseph Barclay, of Eatontown, says the Asbury Park Journal, is stopping for two or three weeks at the Sanders Villa in Ocean Grove. The Judge has been traveling for his health for the past two months and he says that he has made an important discovery: to wit, that he is an old man. Considering that he is 92, his discovery may prove premature.
