AUCTION: Authentic 1989 SIGNED & DATED Iridescent Gold Foil Art Glass Volcano Vase by American Artist Robert Eickholt

This listing is for a gorgeous 20th Century American studio art glass "volcano" vase. This blown glass vase was made in 1982 by the well-known artist, Robert Eickholt, in his studio located in Columbus, Ohio. For this vase, Eickholt has created a base of cobalt blue glass and then applied oxides to give the vase a colorful iridescent dichroic affect. He has applied gold foil as accents to the top part of the vase. The pontil mark on the bottom has been smoothed out and polished indicating superior workmanship. The artist's signature and the date, 1989, can be found etched on the bottom. The vase measures approximately 5 inches in diameter at its widest point and stands approximately 4 inches tall. The opening at the top is 1-5/8 inches wide. The vase is in excellent used vintage condition with respect to age and use. There are no chips, repairs, or cracks. This was clearly a long treasured piece. This colorful glass art would make a lovely addition to your growing Eickholt or American studio art glass collection! I tried to capture the beauty of the blues, greens, teals, and purples, in my pictures, but it is just more exquisite in-person. The addition of the foiling, 1989 date and signature adds to the rareness of the item.

Approximate Size: 4" D, 5x5”

About the Artist

Robert Eickholt was born in 1949 in Columbus, Ohio. As a teen, Eickholt never dreamed he’d be able to pursue his artistry full-time. So he pursued a Bachelor of Science degree in business management and computer science at Miami University. After graduating in 1970, he landed a job as a systems analyst, but after a few years, he was miserable. So he quit his job and headed for Berkeley, California, to study glassblowing. After five years in California, Eickholt returned to his hometown of Columbus and took graduate classes in his craft at Ohio State University and the Columbus College of Art and Design. In 1978, Eickholt opened his own studio. For the next 35 years, Eickholt fashioned sculptures, vases and paperweights from the medium that served as his creative muse. The colors in his work are dazzling with translucent swirls of hues reflecting a palette of sea and sky, incorporating precious metals, including gold and silver, and rare oxides like cobalt and copper, along with dichroic glass. Each piece is handmade one at a time and unique. His beautiful studio glass has earned accolades worldwide and, although Eickholt retired from glass blowing in 2013, his glass art continues to be in high demand. You can search the history of this artist to find out more!
