FOREWORD

Here to follow are the Proceedings of the 4th Course of the International School
of Physical Acoustics, which was held in Erice, Italy, from Oct 3 through Oct 10,
1991, at the International Center for Scientific Culture "Ettore Majorana". We are
proud to announce that the School is now well and lively active among all the other
Schools that for years have been holding courses at the E. Majorana Center. We began
some ten years ago, with a topic, "Fundamentals of ultrasonic wave propagation", that
was chosen on purpose to be as general as possible, in order to test the needs of the
acoustic community and possibility of continuing with topics of a more specific nature.
It appeared through the years that the seed was sown in a fertile field: participation
increased steadily, and the School kept on growing through the comments and works
of its participants.
Ultrasonics sensing and probing was the subject selected for the present course,
where the scholars were intended to be inticed into exchanging their ideas and
experiences with those involved in the many fields of applied science where sound
waves can contribute to give information about material and structure defects.
The interaction of sound waves with the medium of propagation results in effects
that can be used either to study the ultrasonic field itself, or to give information on the
medium. The sensing and/or probing of the ultrasound field is studied together with the
sensing and/or probing by the ultrasound field, unified by the effect of the interaction
of the field with the medium.
We called in papers from the two sides, and hoped to have cross fertilization of
interests. That really stands as one of the main scopes of the School: exchanging
experience and comparing results among people that have a common denominator in
their research work.
We do hope that the target has been partially fulfilled; at least, we presume we
did it in the past from the support the participants gave us to continue the School.
We also hope the Proceedings can enrich the readers and stimulate their interest
in ultrasonic sensing and probing.

Finally, we wish to express our gratitude to all those who contributed to the
success of the School: the sponsoring Institutions named on the front page; the people
at the E. Majorana Center in Erice for their warm support and hospitality; the staff at
the Corbino Institute of Acoustics in Rome for the organization, particularly Lucia
Covi, for her constant and intelligent catalizing action, and Gisella Menichelli for her
care in editing the manuscripts.
