An original Australian albumen print photograph with subtle hand tinting (blue hat band), dating to around 1868-9, in carte de visite format, approx. 103 x 63 mm, by HENRY GLENNY, DUBLIN & MELBOURNE PORTRAIT ROOMS, BALLARAT EAST.

Full-length portrait taken in Irish photographer Henry Glenny's Ballarat East studio. The young lad is likely to be Alfred William Goddard.

The carte came from a disintegrated album which had a presentation inscription at the front, dated 1887, from Alfred William Goddard (Ballarat 1857-1910 Prahran) to his second wife, Sarah Jane Fountain (Ballarat 1858-1925 Richmond). The Goddards were a large family from Ballarat East so I am pretty sure this is Alfred at the age of 11 or 12, photographed in Glenny's Ballarat East studio on Main Road. The Fountain family were from Canadian Gully. Alfred married Sarah at St. Paul's, Ballarat East, in April 1879.

The print is in very good condition; Glenny's back mark is among the most attractive Victorian studio back marks of the 1860s, and features a camera and artist's palette.
