*Our VHS Tape Testing Procedure: (Does not apply to New Sealed tapes)

1. Visual examination.

2. We fast forward each tape to the end then rewind it fully.

3. We play the tape a minimum of 5 minutes to check video tracking and audio.

4. If the tape is tight or exhibits tracking issues on our playback machine we fast forward and rewind it again on an alternate machine to loosen it and test it again.

 5. If the tape still exhibits issues we will recycle it or repair it as needed. If repaired we will state "Repaired" in the listing.

Why we cannot guarantee tapes.

**Tapes and tape machines all operate differently. Weak motors, stretched belts and sticky transport rollers can fail at any moment particularly old ones especially when playing long and/or thinner tapes like double albums. Rubber drive belts deteriorate with time even if unused. Dust and debris penetrates drive parts and capstan rollers. Tape heads can be dislodged and loose proper alignment. Older players may drag the pitch out of tune and/or eat the tape. The tape itself may come in contact with magnetism or heat both of which will impair functionality.

CARE 101:

  • Never set a magnetic tape on top of a speaker or near an amplifier.  The magnetism will erase frequencies and in extreme cases, everything.

  • Never trust any tape player with a drive belt less than a few years old or one that hasn't undergone regular transport mechanism & head cleaning. Bad things happen.

  • Always test older machines first using a very long tape that you can afford to loose. Let it play through for at least a couple of hours. The 1st hour doesn't count. When it get's to the end rewind it to the beginning and monitor it to see if it rewinds quickly or if it drags. If it drags you need a new belt, a motor or an overhaul to the transport mechanism.
