First book club WWII era edition of the landmark work by BETTY SMITH. Novel tells the story of the hard scrabble life of  young Francie Nolan in the rough and tumble world of Williamsburg Brooklyn. Semi autobiographical story of author Smith was the basis for a hit 1945 movie by Elia Kazan. First Book Club Edition issued in 1943 features the original DJ. DJ is in poor to fair condition with notable creasing and chipping (as per photo), but is essentially intact. Book with green boards and gold lettering is in good condition. Cover shows some wear.
