Tiki Terrace is an intimate restaurant with two small rooms, a bar, a stage, and Kapa Nui Kove, an excellent private hut for VIPs. The wait staff (both men and women) are all performers, and will break out in traditional Tahitian dance at various points in the evening. Entertainment on the stage ranges from ukulele virtuoso Jake Shimabukuro to Gwen Kennedy and the Barefoot Hawaiian dancers, to open uke jams. Because of the Zuziak brothers’ performance background and their ties to Barefoot Hawaiian, Tiki Terrace has became a meeting place for the local islander population in the Chicago suburbs. The Aloha spirit is palpable, and things are always friendly and cheerful.
The TiPSY Factor in Tiki Terrace is terrific, with a mixture of wood carvings (such as those by Milwaukee’s Lake Tiki) and Fiberglas creations made by the Zuziaks themselves. A bit of Oceanic Arts work rounds out the vibe.
Tiki Terrace serves great food in a style not unlike what you might find in Honolulu. With names like Kilauea Shrimp, Malahini Salad, and Coco Palms Pasta, you know what you’re in for right away. Entrees are reasonably priced, with most being in the $9 to $12 range; sandwiches are a bit less. Islander favorites like Loco Moco and Spam Burgers add to the flavor of Hawai’i sought by the brothers.
While Jim runs the kitchen and Scott handles the business, Phil can often be found behind the bar, honing his nascent mixology skills. Like most other modern Tiki restaurants, the drink menu consists of a mixture of classic recipes (Zombie, Missionary’s Downfall) and Tiki Terrace originals (try the Tiki Tantrum), all served in Tiki mugs. We also like seeing rarely served classics like Tortuga and Polynesian Spell on the menu. All are a bargain at $6.25.
A great vibe created by a great staff serving great food make any restaurant worth a visit. The high TiPSY factor and variety of entertainment make a visit to Tiki Terrace a must. Please note that the Tiki Terrace plans to move to a larger location in 2007, so Tiki road trippers will want to make sure they call ahead to get the current address."
