The 2024 Dr. Mary Edwards Walker Quarter is the 13th coin in the series. Dr. Mary Edwards Walker was a Civil War era surgeon, and a women’s rights and dress reform advocate. She’s the only woman to be awarded the Medal of Honor.

Mary Edwards Walker was born in Oswego, New York to parents that encouraged her to think freely. They allowed her to wear “bloomer” pants instead of skirts and corsets.

Walker graduated from Syracuse Medical College in 1855. She married fellow medical student Albert Miller, and they set up a joint practice in Rome, New York. The practice failed, probably because the public would not accept a woman as a doctor. She and Albert later divorced.

When the Civil War began in 1861, Walker wanted to join the Union’s efforts, but she was not allowed to serve as an army medical officer because she was a woman. Instead, she served as an unpaid volunteer surgeon at the U.S. Patent Office Hospital in Washington, DC. A year later she went to Virginia to treat wounded soldiers near the front lines.

In 1863, the Army finally accepted her request to practice as a surgeon and commissioned her as a “Contract Acting Assistant Surgeon (civilian)”. She became the first woman to serve as a U.S. Army surgeon.

Walker often crossed battle lines to care for wounded soldiers. In 1864, she was captured by Confederate troops and held for four months as a prisoner of war at Castle Thunder near Richmond, Virginia. She was freed in a prisoner exchange and spent the remainder of the war serving at the Louisville Women’s Prison Hospital and at an orphan asylum in Clarksville, Tennessee.

President Andrew Johnson presented Walker with the Medal of Honor for Meritorious Service in 1865 based on the recommendation of Major Generals Sherman and Thomas. The medal was stripped from her – and several others – by government action in 1916 because she was a civilian at the time of her valor.

Walker opposed society’s expectations of traditional women’s dress codes and often wore “men’s” clothing because she found this attire more practical, comfortable, and sanitary. In the 1860s, she wore a knee-length dress with trousers underneath. Later in life, she wore jackets and trousers most of the time. She was often mocked, punished, and treated as an oddity for her clothing choices.

Dr. Walker died on February 21, 1919. Through the efforts of her grandniece and some members of Congress, the Medal of Honor was officially restored to her by President Jimmy Carter on June 10, 1977.

The previous Maria Tallchief Quarter is the tenth coin in the American Women Quarters Program.

She is widely considered the first American prima ballerina. She broke barriers as a Native American ballet dancer, exhibiting strength and resilience both on and off the stage.

Tallchief was born on January 24, 1925 in Fairfax, Oklahoma on the Osage reservation. She began dance lessons as a young girl and excelled at dance and playing piano.

At the age of 17, she moved to New York City to pursue her dreams of becoming a ballerina. She was selected as an apprentice in the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo, the premier Russian ballet company in the United States. Her performances were applauded by critics and captured the attention of the dance professionals around her.

Add this Perfect ~$10 inventive gift for any young ballerina:

12x 2023 P D Maria Tallchief - American Women Quarter Gift Bag Low Cost 2nd PD

In 1946, she married famed choreographer George Balanchine. With Tallchief’s exceptional technique and energy as a ballerina and Balanchine’s expertise and innovation as a choreographer, together, they transformed classical ballet, both in America and around the world. When the couple’s marriage ended, she remained at the forefront of Balanchine’s works for his company, the New York City Ballet.

She died on April 11, 2013. Her legacy includes numerous honors, such as being named Woman of the Year by the National Women’s Press Club and receiving the National Medal of the Arts Award. She was also inducted into the National Women’s Hall of Fame.

The Osage Tribal Council gave her a name selected by her grandmother, “Wa-Xthe-Thoṉba,” which translates to “Two Standards.” It reflects Tallchief’s life in two worlds – as an accomplished dance professional, and as a member of the Osage Nation, two identities that she proudly represented throughout her life.

Bessie Coleman was the first African American and first Native American woman pilot. She was also the first African American to earn an international pilot’s license.

Coleman was born on January 26, 1892 in Atlanta, Texas during a time of overt racism and segregation laws. After being refused admission into every U.S. flying school she approached, Coleman learned French. She traveled to Paris in 1920 to attend the well-known Caudron Brothers’ School of Aviation in Le Crotoy, France. She was the only student of color in her class.

On June 15, 1921, Coleman received her international pilot’s license from the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale. She returned to the U.S. and performed in her first airshow in September 1922. She became known for “loop-the-loops” and making a figure 8.
