Description

Antique 19th century French sterling silver 4-piece flatware gift set. Comprising of a fork and spoon, napkin ring and tumbler cup, all housed in the original fitted presentation box. Each piece features an intricate guilloche engraved pattern and oval cartouche. Monogrammed with initials AD and as well as numbers 30, 7 and 27. Hallmarked with the French Minerve 1st standard mark, which depicts the head of the goddess Minerva with a number 1 beside her to denote a silver content of .950/1000 (95% silver and a higher grade of finesse than .925 sterling.) Bearing makers marks for Jean Granvigne (sometimes spelled Grandvigne), active 1868 to 1910 at 30 rue des Gravilliers, Paris. A skilled silversmith generally considered to be one of the best French flatware makers of the nineteenth century. Granvigne did not have a shop where clients could come choose their flatware, but rather made patterns to the specifications of high-end retailers such as Maison Odiot and Emile Puiforcat. His workshop was succeeded by Tétard. The napkin ring bearing a maker's mark for silversmiths Capelet & Guthe, active 1885-1895 at 22 rue Michel-le-Comte, Paris. Dimensions: Fork - 6 1/2" length; Spoon - 6 3/4" length; Napkin Ring - 1 7/8" diameter x 3/4" height; Tumbler cup - 2 5/8" diameter x 2 3/4" height; Box - 2 1/8" length x 6 1/8" width x 3 3/4" height. Total silver weight is 160.9 grams. In overall good to fair antique condition, some dents near the base of the tumbler, wear/surface scratches to the cartouches on the fork and spoon. The box shows age related wear.
