Paul Lawrence “Tank” Younger (June 25, 1928 - September 15, 2001) (FB/HB/LB) was the first black player to play in the NFL Pro Bowl and after retiring from the playing field, became the first black Assistant GM in NFL history. Paul “Tank” Younger earned his nickname at Grambling University where he ran through and over anyone who got in his way. Legendary coach Eddie Robinson converted the 6’3”; 225-pound tackle into a running back where he scored led the nation in touchdowns (25) in his freshman years with the Tigers. When he left Grambling, he held the NCAA record for touchdowns with 60 all-purpose scores. He also played linebacker on defense and in 1949, Younger joined the Los Angeles Rams becoming the first NFL player from an all-black university. Tank joined Dick Hoerner and “Deacon” Dan Towler to form the “Bull Elephant” backfield for the Rams. He played ten seasons for the Rams (1949-1957) and the Pittsburgh Steelers (1958). Younger helped lead the Rams to the NFL League Championship Game four times, capturing the NFL Championship in 1951 beating the defending champion Cleveland Browns. During his ten-year career, younger scored 210 points on 35 all-purpose touchdowns, amassed 4,807 yards from scrimmage – 3,640 rushing and 1,167 receiving yards. Tank was a 1951 NFL All-Pro First Team selection and was named to four NFL Pro Bowls. Tank Younger was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2000.
