The Westminster shorter catechism: ratified by the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church in the United States, at Augusta, Georgia, December 4, 1861.

"The Shorter Catechism,* designed particularly for the instruction of the young and as a help in the study of the Holy Scriptures, was completed, after much time and labor spent in its preparation, in the Jerusalem Chamber of Westminster Abbey, London, by an assembly consisting of members from England and Scotland, and presented by them to the British House of Commons on Thursday, November the 25th, 1647, and on the day following to the House of Lords. This catechism soon passed into general use among the Protestants of Great Britain and Ireland and other countries, and is now a part of the constitution of every Presbyterian church in the English- speaking world as an excellent summary of their faith." (*Called the "Shorter" Catechism because there is "Larger"' Catechism; also a part of the constitution of the church.)
