ABSTRACT: First Bodoni edition of this work saw the light anonymously in 1768 due to papal censorship.

Francesco Milizia (1725-1798), a native of Oria in the Brindisi area, dealt with scientific and literary works before dedicating himself entirely to architecture, becoming a rigorous theorist of neoclassicism.

According to Milizia, the beauty of architecture is not to be found in fashion or in the authority of the architects of the past, nor in the subjection of the most famous monuments,  rather in a positive, constant and unalterable principles, they derive from nature itself. â

Bottari, as editor of the re-edition of the Lives of G. Vasari (1759-61), constituted a natural reference for M.'s great biographical project, even if the tendency towards a less verbose treatment extended to the most important architects of all the time

He oriented him towards other sources and other authors, such as the Venetian architect Tommaso Temanza. Extraordinary compendium skills demonstrated by the novice M. not only with regard to Félibien's work, concerning architects from antiquity to the 14th century,  also with the Lives of Vasari, Baldinucci and other more heterogeneous ones such as those of Vincenzo Scamozzi and Vincenzo Vittoria, written specifically by Temanza, and those by Alessandro Pompei and Girolamo Dal Pozzo, the only ones concerning  living characters. (see Biographical Dictionary of Italians, volume 74, 2010, entry edited by Tommaso Manfredi).
