Edward Troughton came from a long line of London instrument makers dating back as far as the early 1700s. His partnership with William Simms, a local businessman, was formed in 1826. Troughton & Simms continued under this name until 1922, at which time the company merged with T Cooke & Sons to become Cooke, Troughton and Simms.
Condition: The instrument is in very good original/unrestored condition, having crystal clear optics giving a nice crisp image. The focusing control operates correctly, the reticle is intact and the spirit level is in good order. The glare shield is present. The case is structurally sound, the original finish now slightly dull and with numerous light scratches. Overall an excellent example.
