Summer Slam 97 "Hart & Soul" - East Rutherford, NJ - Continental Airlines Arena - August 3, 1997 (20,213; 17,361 paid; sell out; new WWF attendance record at the venue)

Pay-per-view bouts - included an opening playing of the National Anthem; featured Vince McMahon, Jim Ross, & Jerry Lawler on commentary; included Todd Pettengill conducting a podium interview with Gov. Christie Todd Whitman, accompanied by WWF President Gorilla Monsoon & the Headbangers, regarding her work to eliminate state taxes and allow the WWF to return to New Jersey; moments later, Monsoon presented her with a replica WWF World Title belt as a way to thank her for her work; featured footage from earlier in the day of the party held in the parking lot, which drew a reported 15,000 people, with appearances from the Honkytonk Man, Sunny, the Headbangers, Shawn Michaels, Dok Hendrix, the Legion of Doom, and Steve Austin; included Pettengill on the podium with Sable, Sunny, Ryan Chadick from Liverpool, NY, and Patrick Stevenson from Lafayette, LA for the Summer Slam Million Dollar Giveaway; after the two contestants drew numbers, Pettengill attempted to call another entrant but no one picked up; moments later, he tried to call another entrant but that line had been disconnected; a third call saw Pettengill call a man named Michael, who said he wasn't watching Summer Slam because his cable company didn't offer it; Sunny then tried the key Michael picked but it didn't work; Pettengill then called a woman named Rebecca; Sable then tried Rebecca's key but it also didn't work; Ryan then tried his key but it didn't open, nor did Patrick's; a contest official then revealed that the winning key was #3; featured Pettengill conducting a backstage interview with Shawn Michaels about his role as the referee for the main event, with Michaels claiming there was no bad blood between he and Bret Hart and whatever bad blood there was ended at WrestleMania 12 when he beat Hart:
Mankind defeated Hunter Hearst Helmsley (w/ Chyna) in a steel cage match at 16:25 by escaping over the top after hitting an elbow from the top of the cage, just before Chyna was able to pull Helmsley out of the ring; prior to the match, footage was shown detailing Helmsley and Mankind's altercations dating back to Canadian Stampede; after the bout, Mankind laid on the arena floor until Dude Love's music began to play, with Mankind then coming to his feet and strutting around ringside 
Goldust (w/ Marlena) pinned Brian Pillman at 7:16 with botched sunset flip into the ring after Marlena hit Pillman in the face with her purse; pre-match stipulations stated Pillman would have to wear a dress on Raw if he lost the match; prior to the bout, Tiger Jeet Singh & Tiger Ali Singh were shown in the crowd; prior to the bout, footage was shown of Pillman attacking Goldust the previous Monday on Raw; during Pillman's entrance, pre-taped footage was shown of him cutting a backstage promo about Marlena; after the match, Marlena put a mannequin wearing a dress, which stood ringside for the duration of the contest, in the ring because Pillman would have to wear the dress the following night; moments later, Pillman destroyed the mannequin
The Legion of Doom defeated Henry & Phinneas Godwinn at 9:51 when Road Warrior Hawk pinned Henry following a spike piledriver; prior to the bout, footage from Shotgun Saturday Night in April was shown in which Henry sustained a broken neck, as well as the LOD being attacked on Raw; after the Godwinns' entrance, the LOD cut a backstage promo on the upcoming match; during the bout, Capt. Lou Albano was shown sitting in the front row
WWF European Champion Davey Boy Smith defeated Ken Shamrock via disqualification at 7:27 when Shamrock hit Smith in the back of the head on the floor with a can of dog food; prior to the bout, footage was shown from the previous Monday of Smith attacking Shamrock with a steel chair and smearing him with dog food; during Smith's entrance, it was announced Smith would face Shawn Michaels Sept. 20 as part of One Night Only in Birmingham, England; after the bout, Shamrock locked Smith in a choke hold, with referees, Tony Garea, Gerald Brisco, Dave Hebner, and Pat Patterson then swarming the ring; after releasing the hold, an enraged and bloody Shamrock dropped several of the officials with belly to belly suplexes as the crowd cheered; pre-match stipulations stated Smith would have to eat the dog food at ringside if he lost
Savio Vega, Miguel Perez, Jesus Castillo, & Jose defeated Crush, Skull, 8-Ball, & Chainz at 9:06 when Miguel pinned Chainz with an elbow drop after Ahmed Johnson, who appeared ringside mid-way through the match with Farooq, Kama, & D-Lo Brown, dropped Chainz with the Pearl River Plunge on the floor; prior to the bout, footage was shown detailing the formation of Los Boricuas and the Disciples of Apocolypse and their recent brawls; after the bout, the three factions brawled in the aisle until the fight was broken up by security
Steve Austin pinned WWF IC Champion Owen Hart with a roll up to win the title at 16:17; prior to the bout, a video package was shown detailing the feud between Austin and Hart dating back to Canadian Stampede; stipulations for the match stated Austin would have to kiss Hart's ass if he didn't beat him; following Hart's entrance, Michael Cole conducted a backstage interview with Austin regarding the stipulations for the match, with Austin telling him off; during the final minute of the match, Hart dropped Austin with a modified tombstone piledriver, causing Austin to have temporary paralysis; after the contest, several referees helped Austin to his feet and then backstage
Bret Hart pinned WWF World Champion the Undertaker to win the title at 28:08 when guest referee Shawn Michaels accidentally hit Taker over the head with a steel chair Hart brought into the ring moments earlier after Hart spat in Michaels' face when Michaels confronted him about the weapon being in the ring; stipulations for the bout stated if Hart didn't win the title then he would never again wrestle in the United States and if Michaels favored Taker in his officiating then he too would not be able to compete in the US; prior to the bout, Hart had the Canadian National Anthem played and dedicated the match to his international fans; immediately after the match, Michaels left ringside, with Taker following after; moments later, Hart draped himself in the Canadian flag and celebrated in the ring with Owen Hart, Brian Pillman, and WWF European Champion Davey Boy Smith as fans threw trash into the ring
