Selling here is a four volume set of James Dugdale's 'The New British Traveller....', printed in London, 1819.

4to, four volumes uniformly bound in period black half morocco over marbled paper covered boards, both boards to volumes one, three and four detached, both boards to volume two held by the cords, spines ornately gilt decorated lettered and with red morocco labels, all page edges speckled red. Period plain endpapers, upper fe removed from volume four.

The book measures 22cm by 27cm.

The contents have been bound without the plates called for on list but including 44 maps as below. Meeting collations:

Volume one without a letterpress titlepage, meeting collation: liv, 5-628pp, with an engraved frontispiece showing Britannia with a lion, and ships in the background., added engraved titlepage, one further engraved titlepage, one large folding map and seven further engraved maps.

Volume two without a letterpress titlepage, meeting collation: 3-606pp, with eight maps.

Volume three with a letterpress titlepage with imprint: London : Printed by and for John Cundee, Ivy-Lane, Paternoster-Row. Meeting collation: [2], 736pp, with ten engraved maps.

Volume four with a added engraved titlepage, letterpress titlepage with imprint: London : Printed and published by J. Robins and Co., Albion Press, Ivy-Lane, Paternoster-Row.  Meeting collation: 789, [3]pp, including index and plate list, with a final page of advertisements. With eighteen engraved maps.

Condition: Bindings variously broken as noted above, spine vol 1 torn across, some general wear and scuffing with abrasion to spine ends/edges. Some early and final leaves with the detached boards, a few tears at inner edges were meeting the block. Contents generally in good condition as seen, some age toning and foxing, the latter more notable round the maps.
