Selling here is Sir Thomas Moore's 'The Common-Wealth of Utopia...', printed in London, 1639. A rare fifth edition in  English of Moore's satiric vision of the ideal state. Text printed within ruled borders.

12mo, bound in period blindruled full calf, recased and corners renewed at some stage, spine with later red morocco label, all page edges speckled red. 16th century printed matter with early annotations used as binders waste. 

The book measures 9cm by 15cm.

The contents are lacking the additional engraved titlepage, otherwise complete, mispaginated at points. Meeting collation: [4], 305pp, the titlepage printed within ornate woodcut border, decorative initials, head and tailpiece. With the dedication to Moore's grandson, Cresacre.

Condition: The binding is firm and in good condition, general wear and scuffing externally as seen, abrasion upper right to label. Contents are firmly bound, some water staining throughout, lower fore edges to initial four quires degraded to margins, title leaf with repair to lower outer corner, some repaired closed tears round same area of k2 (touching into a few letters but without loss of sense), general toning with resultant browning to the water stained areas, lower corner of final couple of quires creased, some scattered spots and smudges as seen but generally in good condition. Small diagonal worm trace to upper right corner of final two quires, touching through ruled margins but letterpress unaffected.
