Head bolts look like pretty rigid fasteners, but they are actually designed to stretch and allow the cylinders to be removed without removing the entire engine.

• What happens if you don't replace the old head bolts?
• An old head bolt that doesn't allow for proper clamping will cause leaks in your engine. The coolant will be able to leak through the bolt hole and cause more issues for your engine.

• Why do head bolts break?
• When the bolts have not been tightened properly, or have loosened up during its service life.

• What happens if head bolts are not tight enough?
• The head gasket can't maintain a tight seal if the head bolts have not been properly torqued. Uneven loading created by unevenly tightened head bolts can distort the head.

How to remove a broken bolt?

• Step 1: Hammer the center punch in the middle of the broken bolt.
• Step 2: Use a left-handed drill bit to create a pilot hole, and switch to an extraction bit.
• Step 4: Reverse-drill slowly to remove a broken bolt.
• Step 5: Remove any metal shavings left behind by the broken bolt using a magnet.
