99.9% INDIE! ASTROESQUE is an instant classic in the pantheon of “No-Budget” films. Although the lack of production values is apparent at times, it’s the creative juices that truly ignite this inspired work. It’s more than low-budget grit, it’s the rarest of entities, a fresh film.

ASTROESQUE is rich with thrilling movement and hypnotic imagery. It makes one wonder what writer-director (musician, actor, comic-book creator) Mike Allred would be capable of with a “real” budget. Drawing inspiration from “Head Movies” like EL TOPO, DON’T LOOK NOW, ZARDOZ, and 2001, and the examples of “No-Budget” pioneers like Jim Jarmusch, Richard Linklater, Robert Rodriguez, and Kevin Smith, Allred bought a $499 Russian camera and a DAT recorder and went to work with a group of enthusiastic friends (including fellow filmmaker, Shane Hawks).

The final result is ASTROESQUE, an enigmatic “Man from Another World” story that is part of Allred’s multimedia RED ROCKET 7 project, which also includes a comic-book series and a record from Allred’s band, GEAR! Simple on the surface, yet deeper with each revealed layer, ASTROESQUE opens itself up to personal interpretation that incites repeat viewing.
