The authors hiking/rafting/kayaking adventure traveling the length of the Amazon River from its source high in the Andes to the sea, during three separate expeditions covering a total of 3,500 miles. It took three separate expeditions to complete. The first attempt by raft and kayak from its first trickles high in the Peruvian Andes through whirlpools and cataracts ended with the breakup of the raft. The second was beset with difficulties of physical hardship and attacks by Marxist guerrillas. The final 3500 miles was undertaken in 1991, and was featured in the BBC series Classic Adventures.
