These small feathers have been dyed so the natural preen gland oils have been lost, but are easily replaced with a flotant such as Watershed which renders them permanently waterproof, again.
These CDC feathers are not the best quality, hence the price. They are too short to wind as a cdc hackle though they could be dubbed in a loop or brush. These feathers are best suited to tying in pairs, or looped whole, as a wing. If you want a better feather see my listing for Hareline CDC Oiler Puffs. These are also short, but very fluffy and pre-treated with Watershed. Or buy Veniards or Semperfli for larger feathers.
There are a range of shades in each packet of 25 feathers because the feathers were not bleached first (which would have damaged their structure). For most colours there will be some darker and lighter variations of colour. Also the feathers may need fluffing up after the washing and drying process. If a packet seems on the empty side you may find a second packet added in to ensure the minimum 25.
