Koi Nobori Red Carp Wind Sock Koinobori Fish Kite Flag

DETAILS OF ITEM

This is a Japanese Carp fish wind sock known as a "Koi Nobori." It measures about 23 inches long by 6 inches wide at its widest point. These wind socks are flown on Japanese Boy's day, May 5th of each year to celebrate the strength, safety, and health of the boys in each Japanese family.

The Carp is known in Japan for its strong will and determination. The idea of the carp as a symbol of strength can be traced back to China, where a legendary saying states that a carp can swim up the fast-flowing Hwang Ho river, and become a dragon. They are often represented in Japanese artwork as attempting to swim up waterfalls or strong river currents. All throughout Japan, the Koi Nobori is hung across each family's home, usually a week before May 5th to a week after, they are seen strewn across the countryside.

The red color scales are stenciled and the material is a durable nylon. The condition of this piece is very good and it is a new piece.
