If you were to choose a key, then chart every note in that key on the neck, you would see 5 distinct hand positions.  The FRETLESS BASS SLIDE RULE CHART is an 8.5"x 11" laminated chart showing the 5 POSITIONS in every key over printed bass necks.  The tuning is E-A-D-G.  The markers are at the 5th, 7th, 12th, 17th and 19th locations.  Easy to use.  For instance, above each set of 2 fretboards are 4 related keys.  The area on the end are the open strings.  If the first chord of a song is C Major, like the chords: C Am F and G, improvise using C Major fretboards or C Major/m7 fretboards.  Usually, the first chord indicates the key.  If the chords of a song begin in Em, use the fretboards for E minor or E minor/Maj6.  Every note showing would be in that key along with your improvised leads or fill in riffs, no matter which color hand position you play. Try it!
