My Lady of the Chinese Courtyard by Elizabeth Cooper. Frederick A. Stokes Company,, New York, 1914. 5th printing. No DJ. An American missionary, Cooper compiled and translated this collection of letters, dating from the 1880s. The book takes an important look at Chinese ladies, not peasants, as they try to survive in a China that is forced into the modern world. It also looks at the role of women in China in the early 1900s. 31 illustrations in Duotone from photographs and a paste-in photo on front cover. 262 pages. In 1991, novelist Eileen Goudge adapted the work and republished it as "Golden Lilies. The book has some mild cover wear and paper residue on the back cover. Corners and spine ends are a bit worn too. The book is a little loose, but the hinges remain intact.
