This is an original stampless folded cover, sometimes called a stampless folded wrapper, and it's real deal--this is NOT a reproduction.   It once contained a now-gone letter.   It was taken to the post office by the writer and mailed through the United States Postal Service.  You are purchasing only the postal portion.  I do not have the letter.

ONE of the reasons it is collectible is because of the fact that  the local postmaster applied postal markings considered appropriate for the letter's journey.  In addition to being collectable because of the town or origin, the addressee, or something else that may appeal to you, it is a collectable item of "postal history" because of the rates, markings and usage.

A very desirable 1817 "UTICA N.Y. MARCH 2" (with the "MARCH along the edge of the CDS and a very small "2") struck in blood red on a wrapper with a '12 1/2" rate addressed to "Archibald McIntire, Comptroller of the State NY, Albany" & docketed by him upon receipt.

Docketed "Acct Fees rec'd by Clerk at Utica qr ending 28 Feb 1817.  Paid to Treasurer Mar: 4. 1817 $450.43."
