The word Mala means garland or rosary in Sanskrit.
Buddha (The enlightened one) recommended the Mantra practise as a path to enlightenment for ordinary people. It is believed that by reciting certain mantras 108 times one occupies not only the mind with positive intention and action but also due to the vibrational energies inherent in specific mantras also body and spirit with positive energy. The 108 beads stand for the 108 virtues. Buddhists believe in an invisible connection of each person to the Divine and that by regular practice this connection will be strengthened so that more and more Divine Energy can decent into a person until he eventually might become enlightened.
These 2x108 or 216 Mala Beads are made from natural Wooden Beads. They are claim to be Rosewood but I am a bit sceptical about this. Each bead is about 5 mm.
Attached to the Mala is a Dharmachakra (Dharma Wheel)* as well as a green or white resin / plastic Swastika* and additional 16 Beads about 4 mm.
Approx circumference of the 108 beads – 80 cm
They are presented in a nice pouch
*The dharma wheel, or dharmachakra in Sanskrit, is one of the oldest symbols of Buddhism. Around the globe it is used to represent Buddhism in the same way that a cross represents Christianity or a Star of David represents Judaism. It is also one of the Eiight Auspicious Symbols of Buddhism.
*Swastika is the symbol of auspiciousness and good fortune -- literally, "It is well." The right-angled arms of this ancient sun-sign denote the indirect way that Divinity is apprehended: by intuition and not by intellect. The swastika remains a major symbol of Hinduism representing eternity, particularly the eternal and ever-present force of the Brahman. It is also a symbol of the present of goodness, as well as representing strength and protection. The message of eternity in the swastika is also widely used by Buddhists. We have chosen Water Aid as a charity because in villages that have a well children can go to school instead of having to walk several times a day to fetch the water. Starvation gets reduced because people can water their crops. Not to mention how many people have to die because they have to drink dirty water or have no water at all. People like you and me do make a difference.....
