This is an original envelope (it's real deal--this is NOT a reproduction) that was taken to the post office by the writer and mailed.

ONE of the reasons it is collectible is because of the fact that  the local postmaster applied postal markings considered appropriate for the envelope's journey.  It is collectable as postal history because of the rate, markings and usage.

"SENECA FALLS N.Y." 1850s Big Black CDS on envelope with RED "PAID" but no rate becuase it was a "Drop" (intra-town) usage.

Addressed to "Mr. & Mrs. D. McIntosh, Seneca Falls."

The envelope was roughly opened on the rear flap.  The envelope is late 1850s manufacture (in my opinion) becuase it is blue on the inside. 

When I found the item, the calling card of "Mr. & Mrs. Henry C. Hutchinson" was enclosed.

This item is from the collection of Calvet Hahn and is accompanied by his original album notes.  Mr. Hahn's collection is very fresh to the market.  Most of his items, including this one, have not been offered for sale for 35-50 years.  Many of the items are "listing" and/or "recording" items according to his album notes.
